The Flame-crested Manakin is distributed in the Amazon Basin south of the Amazon. It is found in seasonally flooded forest (várzea) and woodland bordering rivers.

Male Flame-crested Manakin, Cristalino, Mato Grosso, Brazil, December 2006 - click for larger image The male is dark olive above with a black head and a red crown stripe which is often concealed. It has a conspicuous white throat above a dark olive breast band below which the chest and belly are chestnut to cinnamon-rufous. The female is similar but duller with a grey throat and no crown patch.

There is a recording of its whistled call on xeno-canto.
