The Field Flicker is distributed in eastern Argentina, Uruguay, southern Paraguay and southern Brazil, specifically Rio Grande do Sul state.

It is generally regarded as a sub-species of Campo Flicker C. campestris and is distinguished from the nominate sub-species by the whitish chin and throat which makes the malar stripe more pronounced.
