Although Field Flicker has been treated by some authorities as a species in the past, it has been found to hybridise with Campo Flicker C. campestris so should be regarded as a sub-species of the latter. This subspecies is distributed in eastern Argentina, Uruguay, southern Paraguay and southern Brazil, specifically Rio Grande do Sul state.
