Casupe, Lambayeque, Peru October 2018 The Ecuadorian Trogon is distributed in the west of Ecuador and the extreme north-west of Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in deciduous and semi-humid forest. It was formerly considered a sub-species of Black-tailed Trogon T. melanurus but plumage differences, the very pale iris, vocal differences and its disjunct distribution suggested otherwise. DNA studies confirmed this. These photos are of a male. The female is grey with a red belly. |
