The Eastern Red-necked Araçari is distributed in Brazil south of the Amazon and east of the rio Tapajós. It is found in forest and in gallery forest in cerrado habitat.

It eats fruit and probably also eats eggs and nestlings like its congeners.

The HBW and Birdlife International Checklist splits Red-necked Araçari into Western and Eastern species though most authorities still lump the two as Red-necked Araçari. P. sturmii has an all dark mandible while P. bitorquatus has a white base to the mandible. P. sturmii also has a broader yellow band on the breast.
