The Dark-winged Canastero is distributed in the Andes of south-west Peru, northern Chile and western Bolivia. Most authorities consider it as a sub-species of Creamy-breasted Canastero A. dorbignyi because published data to justify a split are incomplete and insufficient. However, Jaramillo treats it as a separate species.
