The Dark-winged Canastero is distributed in the Andes of south-west Peru, northern Chile and western Bolivia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. Some authorities considered it as a sub-species of Creamy-breasted Canastero A. dorbignyi however, Jaramillo treats it as a separate species as does the HBW and Birdlife International checklist, Clements and eBird.
Dark-winged Canastero, Putre, Chile, February 2007 - click for larger image It is found in the pre-puna shrub zone typical of Putre. It has blackish wings contrasting with the brown upperparts and with rufous on the rump, flanks and undertail coverts. The blackish tail has rufous edging.
