The Dark-breasted Spinetail is distributed on the eastern slope of the Andes from southern Colombia to northern Bolivia and along the Amazon as far as Manaus. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found on river island scrub and overgrown grassy clearings up to about 1,500 metres.
