The Crested Guan is distributed from Mexico south through Central America and into northern Venezuela and western Colombia and Ecuador. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found, often high in the trees, in a variety of forest habitats.

Despite its large range, it is classified as Near Threatened because of the loss of habitat in that range and the threat of hunting.
