Coopmans's Elaenia is distributed inn the extreme south-west of Colombia and in the north-west of Ecuador with a disjunct population on the eastern flank of the Andes in Ecuador. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found in woodland and other semi-open habitats at between 700 and 2,800 metres.

Coopman's Elaenia, Rio Mindo, Pichincha, Ecuador, November 2019 - click for larger image It used to be regarded as a sub-species of Lesser Elaenia E. chiriquensis but Paul Coopmans, a Belgian ornithologist who lived in Ecuador, noticed significant differences in vocalisations. This was later confirmed by genetic differences. Sadly Paul died in 2007 at the age of 45.
