The Chinchipe Spinetail is endemic to Peru where it is found in the middle Rio Marañón and Rio Chinchipe valleys. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found at the edge of woodlands and in arid scrub at between 400 and 600 metres.

Chinchipe Spinetail, Bosque de Yanahuanca, Cajamarca, Peru, October 2018 - click for a larger image Some authorities consider it to be a sub-species of Necklaced Spinetail Synallaxis stictothorax chinchipensis) but it has a longer bill, a much longer tail, spots rather than streaks on the breast and several differences in vocalizations.

The nest is a large stick construction.
