The Chilean Flamingo breeds in Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile. While in some areas they are resident all year, some of the more southerly populations migrate northwards in the austral winter when they can be seen in Uruguay and south Brazil.

Chilean Flamingo, Laguna Chaxa, Chile, January 2007 - click for larger image It is classified as Near Threatened by Birdlife International who estimate that there are about 200,000 birds but they are declining rapidly.

They are usually found in large flocks feeding on aquatic invertebrates in shallow lakes especially where the water is brackish

Chilean Flamingo, Laguna Chaxa, Chile, January 2007 - click for larger image Note the grey legs with the red joints and feet and the pale pink bill with black tip. Compare with Andean Flamingo Phoenicoparrus andinus which is often seen at the same Andean sites.
