The Andean Flamingo is distributed in the high Andean plateaux of southern Peru, northern Chile, western Bolivia and north-western Argentina with a disjunct population at Laguna Mar Chiquita, Córdoba, Argentina.

Andean Flamingo, Laguna Chaxa, Chile, January 2007 - click for larger image It is found at shallow, alkaline salt lakes where it feeds and breeds building a mud cone as a nest for its single egg.

It is classified as Vulnerable by Birdlife International since it has suffered a rapid population decline and is now down to about 34,000 birds.

Andean Flamingo, Laguna Chaxa, Chile, January 2007 - click for larger image It is the largest flamingo found in Chile and is differentiated from Chilean Flamingo Phoenicopterus chilensis by its yellow legs, its black tertials showing at the rear when standing and its bill shape and colour. It also has a deep purple-pink neck and breast.
