The Canyon Canastero is distributed in the Andes from north-west Peru to northern Chile. It is found in arid pre-puna scrub at between 2,400 and 3,700 metres.

The wings and lower flanks are rufous as is the tail and it is the most rufous-looking of the canasteros in Chile. Underparts are pale grey with an orange or whitish throat patch.

There are recordings and a distribution map on xeno-canto. Note that the map does not quite stretch to the north of Chile where this species was only recently found around the Putre area.
