The Buff-winged Starfrontlet is distributed in the Andes of south Colombia through Ecuador to the extreme north of Peru. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in cloudforest and Polylepis woodland at between 2,700 and 4,000 metres.

Buff-winged Starfrontlet, Yanacocha, Pichincha, Ecuador, November 2019 - click for larger image The buff patch on the wings is unique while the male is black above with a glittering green frontlet, a violet-blue throat patch and a small white spot behind the eye. The female is green above with a buffy throat.
