The Blue-necked Jacamar is found in the Amazon Basin south of the Amazon. It is found in lowland forest, often várzea, though not in these cases. It is usually low down and, because of its preference for undisturbed forest, is more vulnerable to habitat loss than most jacamars.

There is are illustrations in HBW, Volume 7, Pages 78 and 92.

Blue-cheeked Jacamar, Carajás, Pará, Brazil, October 2005 - click for larger image Because of its habitat, I have found it difficult to get a photo without using flash which, as you can see in photos 1 and 2, distorts the colours of Jacamars. I was fortunate at Carajás to find a bird that moved into better light so that I could take a photo without flash. You can see the considerable difference in colouration.
