The Blue-capped Tanager is distributed from Trinidad and Venezuela through Colombia, Ecuador and Peru to central Bolivia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in forest and forest edges at mid-storey and in the canopy at between 1,500 and 3,100 metres.
