The Black Metaltail is endemic to Peru where it is found in montane scrub and woodland at between 2,700 and 4,300 metres. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

Black Metaltail, Rio Chonta, Cajamarca, Peru, October 2018 - click for larger image It is the largest metaltail which is almost black apart from a greenish blue gorget (not visible in these photos) and a coppery red tail. It has a small white postocular spot and small whitish leg puffs (just visible in photo 3).
