The Black-crested Tit-Tyrant is distributed in the north of Peru and the extreme south of Ecuador. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in Polylepis forest and montane scrub from 2,100 to 4,000 metres.

It is the largest Tit-Tyrant with the longest crest.
