Koepcke Reserve, San Martin, Peru September 2018 The Black-bellied Thorntail is distributed in western Amazonia and into the Andean foothills while there is a disjunct population in eastern Brazil. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in the canopy and edges of humid forest. |

The male, seen here, has a long and narrow, forked tail but has no crest unlike the similar Wire-crested Thorntail D. popelairii. | |||
