The Black-and-white Hawk-eagle is distributed from southern Mexico to Colombia and in South America south to northern Argentina though it seems to be absent from much of western Amazonia. See the distribution map at xeno-canto. It is found in a variety of forest habitats but seems to prefer being close to rivers.
