The American Redstart breeds in Canada and eastern USA but winters in the West Indies, Central America and northern South America south to northern Peru and northern Brazil. It is found in a variety of habitats from forest to woodlands and gardens.

Male American Redstart, La Güira, Cuba, February 2005 - click on image for a larger view The male, seen here in photos 1 and 2, is black with orange on the flanks, wings and tail and white on the belly. The female (photos 3 and 4) is olive grey above, white below and the orange of the male becomes yellow to cream.

It is a very active little warbler and, though common, I found it very hard to get a good photo.
