The Amazonian Antshrike is distributed throughout much of the Amazon Basin. Different sub-species have different preferences with regard to habitat. This is the nominate sub-species and we found it low down in the tangled vegetation round an ox-bow lake.

Female Amazonian Antshrike, River Javarí, Peru, September 2003 - click for larger image This female Amazonian Antshrike shows the bright orange-rufous on the head, neck and underparts though fading towards the belly. The second photo shows the black wings with white wing-bars.The male has grey replacing the orange-rufous of the female.

They are usually found in pairs and often accompany understorey flocks.
