The White-faced Heron is distributed in most of Australia except the arid centre, New Zealand, New Guinea and the south of Indonesia. It is found in wetlands, estuaries, shores and pastureland.

White-faced Heron, Maria Island, Tasmania, Australia, February 2006 - click for larger image It is a common small, grey heron with a white face and yellow legs. The immature, seen here in photo 6, has little white on the face though it has a whitish throat.
