The Wandering Whistling-duck is distributed along the coasts of tropical Australia and in Indonesia, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. There is a distribution map at Birdlife International. They are found in lagoons and swamps with plenty of vegetation.

Wandering Whistling Duck, Daintree, Queensland, Australia, November 2010 - click for larger image They feed on aquatic plants and insects and prefer the deeper lagoons where they can dive and swim underwater. Very observant they seem to be constantly on the move and can be easily disturbed.

They utter a shrill, high-pitched whistle either singly or as a multiple twittering.
