The Varied Triller is distributed in New Guinea and surrounding islands and in northern and eastern Australia. It is found in a variety of forest and woodland habitats as well as gardens and mangroves.

Photo 1 shows a male of the nominate race from eastern Australia with plain grey underparts merging into a rich rufous lower belly and crissum. Photos 2 and 3 show males of the sub-species L. l. rufiventris from the north of Northern Territory. These males differ from the nominate in having paler rufous on the lower belly and crissum and barring on the underparts. The rump also shows white mottled bars whereas the rump on the nominate is plain mid grey.
