The Squatter Pigeon is endemic to Australia where it is distributed in Queensland and the north of New South Wales. It is found in grassy woodlands and plains but is never far from water.

Squatter Pigeon, Kuranda, Queensland, Australia, November 2010 - click for larger image It feeds exclusively on the ground where it searches for seeds and the occasional insect. It has declined throughout most of its historic range due to heavy grazing by both sheep and cattle.

The birds in these photos belong to the race G. s. peninsulae from the north of its range. This subspecies has orange-red skin round the eye, whereas the nominate subspecies has blue-grey round the eye.
