The Black-eared Catbird is distributed in north-east Queensland, Australia and in Papua New Guinea and nearby islands. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in rainforests and forest margins but can stray into nearby farmland and gardens.

It gets its English name from the curious cat-like call that it makes.
