The Splendid Fairy-wren is distributed in Australia except along the north, east and most of the south coasts. It is found in scrubland and dense vegetation on woodland, etc. It feeds mainly on insects.

Female Splendid Fairy-wren, Cheyne Beach, Western Australia, October 2013 - click for larger image The male is a very attractive mixture of shades of violet-blue with some black. The female, seen here in photos 2 and 3, has tan lores and bill and a dull blue tail. Photo 4 shows a male moving from eclipse plumage to breeding plumage.
