The Red-tailed Black-cockatoo is distributed in large parts of Australia apart from the south-east and much of the centre and south. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in a variety of different habitats depending in part on the sub-species. The nominate sub-species from north-east Australia seen here in photos 2 to 4 is found in forest while the sub-species C. b. macrorhynchus (photo 1) from the tropical noreth Australia is found in woodland.

Joseph Bank's draughtsman, Sydney Parkinson, drew a pencil sketch of a female in 1770. The male is all black except for a bright red band near the end of the tail. The female, photos 2 and 3, is browny-black with yellow specks on the head, neck and shoulders. The tail is more orange-red.
