The Pink-eared Duck is endemic to mainland Australia where it is found mainly in temporary ponds and lakes in inland Australia but also in coastal mangroves and wetlands during dry spells.

Apart from the pink ear, which is not always visible, it has a massive, grey, square-tipped bill, a dark brown eye-patch and brownish barring on the flanks and underparts. | |||
