Major Mitchell's Cockatoo is distributed throughout inland Australia and towards the coast in south and west Australia. See the distribution map at Birdlife International.

Major Mitchell's Cockatoo, Glen Helen, Northern Territory, Australia, September 2013 - click for larger image They are found in semi-arid and arid areas near water and trees in which they find nest-hollows. It feeds on the ground and the branches of trees on nuts, seeds, fruits and roots.

The Scot, Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Thomas Mitchell (1772-1885) was a famous explorer who wrote about the bird in his book Three Expeditions into the interior of Eastern Australia.
