Macleay's Honeyeater is distributed in a restricted area of Queensland from Cooktown in the north to Paluma in the south. It is found in rainforest and rainforest edges.

Macleay's Honeyeater, Kuranda, Queensland, Australia, November 2010 - click for larger image Despite its English name, it is omnivorous probably feeding mostly on insects though it does eat nectar and small fruits. It feeds at all levels in the forest but mainly in the canopy.

The Macleay family were naturalists and collectors as well as politicians. They donated their extensive collection to Sydney University in 1887.
