November 2010

The Black-bellied Crimson Finch is distributed in north-west Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. It is found near watercourses in semi-arid areas, in swampy grassland and in sugar plantations.

It feeds on the seeds of grasses and on spiders and insects but it rarely feeds on the ground. Very aggressive, it is usually seen singly or in pairs.

The male is shown here. The female is similar above but with grey upper breast and flanks and whitish from belly to undertail coverts.
