Bower's Shrike-thrush is distributed in a restricted area of north-east Queensland between Cooktown in the north and Townsville in the south. It is found in tropical rainforest near the coast and is mostly above 400 metres.

It has a wide variety of vocalisations that involve clear whistled notes while the call is a short series of loud "tuck"s.
