The genus Himantopus is treated in different ways taxonomically by different authorities. Howard & Moore and HBW treat the Australian population as a sub-species Himantopus himantopus leucocephalus while Clements and others elevate it to species status as Pied Stilt Himantopus leucocephalus.

It is found in swamps, river and lake margins, saltmarsh, estuaries and mudflats.
