The genus Himantopus is treated in different ways taxonomically by different authorities. Howard & Moore and HBW treat the Australian population as a sub-species Himantopus himantopus leucocephalus while Clements and others elevate it to species status as Pied Stilt Himantopus leucocephalus. |

The differences between the sub-species are most noticeably in the amount of black on the head and neck.
It is found in swamps, river and lake margins, saltmarsh, estuaries and mudflats. |
