The Beautiful Firetail is distributed from the Great Dividing Range to the coast in south-east Australia and in Tasmania. It is found in dense vegetation in coastal heathlands, forest and woodland where it tends to be solitary.

The rump is bright red and the underparts, back and wings are finely barred. The immature, seen here in photos 2 and 3, is duller with a dark bill.
