The Bar-shouldered Dove is distributed in the north and east of Australia as well as the south of Papua New Guinea. It is found in a variety of habitats including scrubland, mangroves, swamps, eucalyptus woodland, etc., but always fairly close to water.

Bar-shouldered Dove, Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, October 2013 - click for larger image It has an unbarred, grey upper breast and a black-barred coppery nape. The eye ring is normally grey but turns red-brown when breeding.

It feeds on seeds.
