The Australian Hobby is distributed throughout most of Australia and in adjacent areas of Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. It is found in open woodlands as well as cities and parks.

Australian Hobby, Coorong, South Australia, February 2006 - click for larger image It is like a small version of Peregrine Falcon F. peregrinus with a whitish throat and half collar contrasting with the dark head. It has a blue cere and eye-ring.

It preys on small birds which it chases or dives on from a height. It also hunts insects.
