The Australasian Pipit is distributed throughout Australia including Tasmania and New Zealand and in east central New Guinea. See the distribution map at Birdlife International. It is found in open grassland, roadsides, etc..

It is sometimes lumped with Richard's Pipit A. richardi and sometimes split as Australian Pipit A. australis.
