The Asian Dowitcher breeds in the steppes of Siberia and Mongolia in freshwater wetlands and bogs. It migrates in the northern winter to eastern India, south-east Asia, Indonesia and northern Australia where it is found in a variety of coastal habitats.

It is often found with Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica and its plumage is very similar However, it is smaller with an all dark and differently shaped bill. The eye-stripe is bolder and the supercilium more extensive.
