Wood Sandpiper breeds in northern Europe and Asia often in swampy areas such as peat bogs and mainly between the tundra and the coniferous forest. In the northern winter they migrate to sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, India, south-east Asia and Australia.

It is similar to Green Sandpiper T. ochropus but upperparts are paler and the supercilium is more marked while the legs are longer and more yellow.

Its alarm call, given when flushed, is a series of "jiff-iff-iff-iff" notes.
