The Southern Grey Shrike is distributed from the Iberian Peninsula and southern France through north Africa and the Middle East to India and central China. It is normally found in open country with thorny scrub or bushes.

It resembles Great Grey Shrike L. excubitor which is generally found further north in Eurasia as well as in North America. However, the Southern Grey Shrike tends to be paler above with less white on the wings and with the black eye stripe extending above the bill on the forehead. The race found in Abu Dhabi, where it is a common breeding resident, is L. m. aucheri.
