The Purple Sunbird is distributed from the eastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula through the Indian sub-continent and into south-east Asia. It is found near flowering shrubs and trees in dry forest, scrub and in gardens where it feeds on small insects, spiders, nectar and small fruits.

Eclipse Male Purple Sunbird, Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, December 2010 - click for larger image The male in breeding plumage is dark metallic blue and purple as in photo 1. Its eclipse plumage is pale-olive brown above with blackish wings and tail and yellow below with a broad blue-black stripe down the middle of the throat, breast and belly as shown in photos 2 to 4.

The female in photo 5 is olive-brown above with a yellow supercilium, dull yellow below and with a black tail with a narrow white tip.
