Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates The Purple Sunbird is distributed from the eastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula through the Indian sub-continent and into south-east Asia. It is found near flowering shrubs and trees in dry forest, scrub and in gardens where it feeds on small insects, spiders, nectar and small fruits. |

The male in breeding plumage is dark metallic blue and purple as in photo 1. Its eclipse plumage is pale-olive brown above with blackish wings and tail and yellow below with a broad blue-black stripe down the middle of the throat, breast and belly as shown in photos 2 to 4. The female in photo 5 is olive-brown above with a yellow supercilium, dull yellow below and with a black tail with a narrow white tip. | |||
