The Indian Silverbill is distributed throughout the Indian subcontinent, including Sri Lanka and westawrds to southern Iran, the UAE and Oman with a disjunct population round the Sinai Peninsula thought to have originated with escaped cage birds.

It is found in open areas of grassland, scrub, semi-desert and gardens where it feeds mainly on seeds on or near the ground.
