Jebel Hafeet, Al Ain, Abu Dhabi

The Desert Lark is distributed in Africa north of the Sahara, the Arabian Peninsula and into Iran, Pakistan and north-west India. It is found in desert and semi-desert but avoids flat, sandy areas.

Desert Lark, Jebel Hafeet, Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, December 2010 - click for larger image There are about 24 sub-species with quite a wide variation in plumage. The sub-species shown here is A. d. taimuri which is similar in looks to the nominate.

Features to look for are the fairly heavy bill with a brownish-yellow base and a darker culmen and tip. It is unstreaked above and has a slow, undulating flight.

The song, often given in a descending glide, is a repeated short and melodious phrase.
