The Striped Ground Squirrel is distributed in Africa in a broad band south of the Sahara and north of the tropical rainforest from the Atlantic coast to Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. It is found in open woodland, savannah and other semi-arid habitats.

Being ground squirrels their claws are more adapted to burrowing than to climbing.
