The Barbary Ground Squirrel is distributed in the Atlas Mountains of north-west Africa with an introduced population in the Canary Islands. See the map at IUCN. It is found in rocky areas in the desert and alpine meadows from 150 to 4,000 metres. It is the only squirrel to be found in Africa north of the Sahara.
