The Spider Tortoise is endemic to south-west Madagascar where it is found in arid and semi-arid dry forests where it needs about 30% canopy cover to thermoregulate. See the map at the IUCN Red List.

It is Critically Endangered because of habitat loss and collecting for the pet trade.
