The Mongoose Lemur is endemic to a small area in the north-west of Madagascar although there have been introductions into the nearby Comoros Islands. See the distribution map at IUCN. It is found in dry deciduous forest and the threats to its habitat and continued hunting despite its legally protected status lead it to be classified as Critically Endangered according to the IUCN.

They live in small family groups. They are active both during the day and during the night although they are more nocturnal during the dry season and feed on fruit, flowers and nectar.

These photos are of a male showing rufous-brown on the cheeks, beard, forehead and nape of neck. In the female these parts are creamy-grey.
