The Spotted Sandgrouse is distributed from southern Morocco and Mauritania through the Sahara to the Arabian Peninsula, Iraq, Pakistan and north-west India. It is found in semi-desert and desert both stony and sandy but it needs nearby drinking water.

Spotted Sandgrouse, near Boumalne du Dades, Morocco, April 2014 - click for larger image The female, shown here in photos 1 and 2, is very spotty and has a tail projection. The male, in photos 3 to 5, has orange throat, and neck sides as well as a tail projection. In flight it shows a narrow black band in the centre of the belly.
