Catalunya, Spain Previously the Eurasian Goshawk was lumped with the American Goshawk Astur atricapillus under the name Northern Goshawk Accipiter gentilis. Recent (2014) DNA studies have shown that they should be regarded as distinct species. |

In medieval times its use in falconry was restricted to the nobility as it was the top avian hunter. It has suffered in the past from its predilection for game birds and then from the introduction of pesticides but it is now recovering in most places. |
